NAT = Network Address Translation

The easy way to explain it is your cable modem has your main IP address. You connect your cable modem to your router which is connected to several different computers.

Those computers cannot have the same external IP, so your router issues them a LAN IP and then determines the route of traffic for each computer.

So your router controlls the what goes out to the internet and back via NAT.

NAT stands for Network Address Translation. IANA the group that creates IP numbering schemes made two groups, routable(public) and non-routable(private) addresses. With increased home networking, ISPs give you a public routable IP and then your router communicates to your local network through a non-routable private IP. In order to exemplify this, most home private networks use 192.168.X.X number scheme. While the computers and routers communicate with this scheme inside, in order to get to yahoo.com, you need a public IP. Lets say that your public IP is 28.45.71.52, and you want to go to yahoo.com. Your router does this on your behalf by communicating on both networks. When it gets a request from either side, it will translate the IP address so it can be used accordingly.
