For sitcoms shot in a studio (e.g. F.R.I.E.N.D.S), they actually record the reactions of the audience as they are filming it. Of course, because everything is done in takes, their reactions will not neccessarily be genuine, but each set of laughs is unique to each joke. When scenes are shot on location, the audience is shown the scenes on a monitor, and their reactions are again recorded.
However, this doesn't apply to all shows. Shows on a budget would most likely just have a few dozen recordings that they paste in afterwards.

Sorry, but most of you are wrong. For most sitcoms these days, the laughter does not come from a studio audience. In fact, most of them aren't even filmed in front of an audience anymore. The laughter you hear actually is coming from a lot of dead people because the laugh tracks (recordings) they use were recorded in the 50s and 60s.

You've got me thinking on that question...I believe some programs do record a separate tape on a audiences laughter and then add it. Do you remember Max Bygraves...well he was asked on TV about this kind of procedure and he said that they cheat by using a clapometer instead of of an audience applause.

paid live studio audiences. I once tried to get into show business and all I did was get paid to sit and laugh and ooh and applaud on command. A one hour show takes three hours. Sitcoms are filmed in pieces and clips that didn't take place in the studio (like a street scene) are shown on monitors.

I think that when they do live filming they have one of those things in front of the audience that they can put :applause" and "laugh" and stuff on them and the audience just goes along with that

It is recorded on live shows.
Then it is edited to make it longer (looped) and louder for certain parts, but remember some is also live, people watch it in studios and the luaghter is cut for the show
