I have had my van in the shop 3 times now, the brakes are new and they say there is nothing wrong. Why are my brakes squeaking? My van sounds like a school bus stopping sometimes. It is embarrassing and I want the squeaking to stop. Does anyone know what it could be? My van is still under waranty and I am getting upset, if the brakes are squeaking I know it's not normal.

Go to another shop. Ask them to install some new brake shims between the brake pads and the calipers. They can also put some anti-squeal on the back of the brake pads to minimize squeal too.

However if you van recommended ceramic brakes, and they installed semi-metallics (which are cheaper), you will get squeal.

Semi-metalics typically last longer than ceramics, but they also end up squealing more.

Depending on what your brake pads are made of it may be very normal for the noise. Generally the pads that are made of a high metallic substance verses ceramic will be noisier, but the metallic usually stop a little better. DON"T put grease or any other lubricant on your pads if you want to stop. You can try washing off your discs and drums to eliminate the dust that can also make noise. Also, you said you just had the pads replaced, it is normal for new pads to squeak for a while.

I had the same problem when I change my brakes from the recommended ceramic pads to metallic. I was trying to save some money by going with the cheaper brakes. After encountering the problem, I asked a mechanic why my car was squeaking so badly. He told me to change back to the ceramic pads. I followed his advice and squeaking stopped. He said it is a common problem. He also told me that the ceramic pads will last longer actual saving you money on pads in the long run.

try to clean your brakes they may have dust and that can cause them to squeak but if the squeak doesn't stop change out your brake pads if that doesn't stop it take your van back to the dealer and them your issue they should fix it for free if it's still under waranty also check you brake fluid

ACTUALLY SQUEAKY BRAKES CAN BE QUITE NORMAL.

I MEAN THINK ABOUT WHAT BRAKES ARE AND HOW THEY WORK. YOUR BRAKE PADS ARE A COMPOSITE MATERIAL OF METAL, CARBON, GRAPHITE, AND OTHER MATERIALS. THE BRAKE ROTOR IS MADE OF STEEL. SO BASICALLY WHEN YOU HIT THE BRAKES YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT METAL ON METAL CONTACT. OF COURSE THE BRAKE PADS MATERIAL WILL REDUCE THE NOISE AND RIGIDITY OF THE PADS, BUT THEY CAN STILL SQUEAK.

MY ADVISE TO YOU IS TO STOP TAKING IT BACK TO THE SAME SHOP. GO TO AN INDEPENDENT SHOP OR JUST GO TO THE AUTOPARTS STORE AND BUY A PACKET OF BRAKE PAD COATING. REMOVE THE CALIPER SHOES AND DAB A BIT ON YOUR FRONT BRAKE PADS.

THERE IS NO NEED TO GET UPSET. THESE THINGS HAPPEN WITH BRAKES SOMETIMES THEY SQUEAK MOST OF THE TIMES THEY DONT

I have found it to be possibly one of two things.
1) The brakes may be metallic and the metal in the linings are causing the squeak
2) Some break pads require a chamfering of the front portion , ( filing on an angle to get rid of the sharp edge).

It sounds like your break pads are worn. Ask the mechanic to take a ride around to block with you to show him exactly what you mean.
