Unless I know that my feet are dirty, I only walk across the mat and keep my shoes on. If I know that my shoes are dirty, I wipe throughly and take my shoes off. I rent and my carpet is some sort of industrial carpet that hides al the dirt.

it depends on if you personally want barefeet in the house. a door mat is to wipe your feet on and if you have really muddy shoes or boots I would personally leave them at the door

It depends on whose house you are entering? Wipe shoes on door mat, then remove shoes. if shoes are clean no reason to remove them.

Take my shoes off. We leave our shoes on the porch so when we get to the door we take our shoes off before ever stepping inside the house.

I wipe my bare feet on the mat. When they're very dirty, I go to the bathroom and wash them.

I take my shoes off and so do others. It is a lot easier than washing the floor. You teach people how to treat you. My children's friends still take their shoes off and they are in their 40's.
