Some people don't understand them (including me). I can't count how many times I've seen questions like "How can I be more emo?" on here. It seems that they want to change themselves to fit a label.

Because you guys are kind of creepy, not all emo kids just most. Then most emo kids act like they're the only people that have problems in the world and no one understands them. So normal people are like you loser get use to it, this is life. So that's 2 reasons why.

Because most of them, but not all of them, are just conforming to a group just like everyone else. A lot of them are hypocrites because they "just want to be different" but then end up looking and acting just like the emo stereotype. That makes them unoriginal and pretentious.
Also, by definition, they're over-emotional, and a lot of people see that as a weakness.
But seriously, how can we NOT look down upon them when they're already looking down upon themselves and crying about it/embracing it? Seriously.

i am not emo myself but i love emo people. they are just so emotionally unstable that its entertaining. besides who wouldnt love a boy in heavy eyeliner and his sisters pants singing stabby rip stab stab?? thats raw man
