Don't get me wrong, I think humour is everything - BUT I mean the people that will say something totally normal to you like 'been shopping then' or 'its raining isn't it' and then chuckle away - WHY????? Its bloody annoying!

P.S - Its usually older people.

This is a phenomenon called inertial humor. There is also similar phenomena in all of the human emotions. Humans store information and memories attached to emotional states. As they get older it just takes a few words to trigger emotional states that have nothing to do with the current circumstances. Yes, this is annoying to you, but to the laughing person...you just made their day. Just be glad you didn't say the trigger word to a person who stores anger or sadness in this way.

It covers up confusion. It's also a self defense mechanism, people laugh when they don't know what else to do. Or, on the postive side, they just like to laugh and they are happy people. If you were to tell them its annoying though, you would probably feel like a total jerk. So people laugh at nothing for these reasons.

It can be any of these:

1. Light laughter indicating friendliness or happiness
2. Nervousness
3. Inside joke they just remembered
4. They're a generally happy person
5. They relate to you about something and know how bad it sucks, such as waiting in long lines, being stuck in rain

They probably don't mean any harm, so just laugh with them and you'll feel happier not worrying about it

It can be a means of lessening the social tension or anxiety the person is feeling about the situation. Humor is a way many use to overshadow personal feelings of inadequacy in social settings.

Its probably either that they heard the saying," The more you laugh the longer you live." Or most likely they want to have a fun day or time and want to brighten up the situation. Otherwise, who really knows??? .........lol

Maybe because they are nervous, or want to make people feel happy, or want to make themselves feel happy...I don't know.

It just seems like one of those things people do to lighten the mood, or keep the mood light, or keep the conversation in a happy "tone."

my guess is its a polite way to show interest... i myself laugh at nothing but usually there is something going on in my head that i find to be amusing. most of the time it offends people because they think i am laughing at them

I do it, just because I'm not the sociable, and I never know what to say to people. I wish it wasn't such a force of habit.

It could be an inside secret, what's the matter with someone just laughing. It keeps us young!
