from killing just one person on upcoming St. Patrick's Day? I DO NOT drink and drive but I know many people do. What can be done to help convince people NOT to drink and drive, or to stop people from doing it, especially on holidays such as St. Patrick's Day when we know a lot of people go to bars and get very drunk - and some of them drive home from the bars.

Random breath testing. While people do get arrested for drink driving in Australia, the numbers have plummeted since RBT was introduced. Any police officer can stop any driver and do a breath test. RBT stations are often set up near places where drinking is occurring to check the people leaving. People know if they drink and drive they will be caught, perhaps not on this trip but in the near future. A driver's licence is a privilege not a right and with it come responsibilities.

Many bars and clubs will provide free soft drinks for designated drivers. Groups of friends going out together take it in turns to be the designated driver and the DD does not drink alcohol that night. Some bars will provide a badge for the DDs to wear so the bar staff know they get free drinks. It works.

Public attitude. Drink driving is a crime and is seen as such by the community. There is no sympathy for people caught and none should be offered. You should take some responsibility yourself and dissuade friends from driving after drinking.

Change the drinking laws in some places so that liquor is more readily available. This might sound silly but if you have a dry county, and there are still some in the USA, people who want a drink will drive to the next county where they can get a drink - and then drive home. If they could walk to a local outlet, they would not be on the road.

THere are all kinds of laws out there in regards to privacy. But in my opinion There should be a law in place where The bars that serve alcohol should have a video surveillance camera outside the establishment with a warning sign stating that keys will be confiscated from anyone who deems unsuitable to drive. THe bartenders and waitresses should be trained in recognizing if someone is drunk and if that person came in driving should blow a breathalizer before leaving. There are many services available to be Designated drivers. II have three adult drinker children and 2 more on the way. I would definetly be advertising to my children if there was a bar they could go to and be babysat. I think it is the responsibility of the servers to recognize someone who is drunk. It doesn't have to messy either. Make friends with a drunk and show them you care and they will respond positive.

When you're drunk, you don't always do the right thing. You're more likely to call an ex, cheat on a spouse, or (you guessed it) drive under the influence.

The best way to avoid this is to always have a plan and a way to get home. Have some cash, go with friends, have a designated driver AND a taxi's number in your pocket. You can't rely on your judgment; you have to pre-plan.

The Mother's Against Drunk Driving have quite a few resources available. It's a tragedy, and you know it will happen, but it's just hard to be everywhere and prevent everyone from being idiots.

why don't you sit outside a bar and offer people who are drunk a ride home? then when you drop them off, give them some flyers on drunk driving or something - and you can always charge them for the ride, make some money & do a noble thing.

Show maimed young drivers and body parts strewn on the highway or in someone's front yard.

A recent drunk driver in So. CALIFORNIA sheared off half her head and her images were plastered on the internet...
it didn't help her but maybe it kept her from having others follow her violent exit. Daddy and Mommy cried for their little girl missing half her head and face. How does that make you feel?

I don't know what kind of services you have in your state, but where I am from we have something called "I'm Smart" and you can call a number to come pick you up and drive you. Or simply offer someone a cab ride if you see them. Convince them to call a friend or a cab!! I think it's wonderful what you're trying to so and good luck!!

If you see someone get into a car intoxicated, call the police immediately. Might sound harsh, but it also might save some poor family from getting a midnight call from the police that a loved one has been killed.

People have been trying to stop this for as long as I remember! I don't think that there is anything that you can do other then take all alcohol off the market!
