If a football team started at the 10 yard line and gained 1/2 the distance to the goal line each down, how many downs would it take to score? Assuming they did not run out of downs?

Well regardless of where on the football field your offense beings it's possession you get 4 downs. If you don't convert on three down then you either attempt a field goal or punt the football depending on what side of the field you are starting at. If you are on your opponent's 5 yard line and don't get into the end zone on the first 3 downs then you would attempt a field goal on 4th down. If you are at your own 5 yard line then you would have to go 95 yards down the field to score a touchdown. If you don't get at least a first down after 3 downs then you most likely would punt the ball.

The would never score. They would have to score from halfway between the 1 and 2 yard line on fourth down to score.

In terms of REAL football? Once you got down within the 1 yard line, even if you only get it halfway to the goal, you're likely going to get something called a TD half the time. It might never actually cross the goal-line, but odds are, if you had something that looked like a TD, it'd get called one.

But in terms of math, no, technically, you'd never make it in.

If this hypothetical team is the Arizona Cardinals, they would eventually turn the ball over in horrific fashion and the other team would immediately score.

Sounds like a trick question, but...

Let's see....10...gain 45 to opponent's 45...gain 22.5 to 22.5...gain 11 to 11...gain 5 to 6...gain 3 to 3...gain 1 to 2...kick field goal
Score on the seventh play...

they would never be able to score since they'd always be short of the goal line

they'd eventually ahve to actually move the ball on their own once it got down to the inches line. somewhere around 9 downs they'd have to move ti actually.
