It is a disease, which is more synonomous with ailment than illness. Most people just think the person who drinks excessively is "naughty", but there is lots more to it that that. Treatment is available for it, but you have to want it, which usually takes alot of bad things in your life happening before you are willing to go to the hard work of changing, and filling that spiritual void with something other than booze.

How "sick" someone is, depends on how well--if at all--he or she is treating it. You could compare it to diabetes:

If a diabetic eats whatever & whenever they want, does not check their blood sugar levels, rarely goes to the doctor, takes their insulin when they want, and how much they want...if at all, and generally takes poor care of their health (especially cuts & bruises to the hands & feet)--they will not live very long.

If an alocholic does not do things like attend support group meetings, find ways to work through the damage of their past, tell close friends how they are doing on a daily basis, find something to believe in, read supportive litature regularly, stay in touch with how they are feeling--and share all this with someone, and follow some sort of daily program that keeps them off the sauce, they will drink again, and die sooner.

So, this is where the evil lies: when one does not take care of the special challenges in life that you are dealt. And the consequences are generally a less long life, and misery for everyone around you in the meantime.

It is a physical addiction that affects your mind and body very severely, so yes, it is an illness.

An ailment goes away after a while. If you become an alcoholic, you will stay an alcoholic for the rest of your life, unless you become tee-total and never drink again.

Alcoholism is a habit. Its not an ailment or a disease.
Having said that, it is a serious and debilitating problem. It not only affects the sufferer but those around him/her. So many deaths, marriage breakups, assaults, violence, debts etc.,.have been caused by this unneccesary self affliction that I am surprised that Governments have'nt banned it. We all know of course, that its the money generated to government coffers that prevents common sense prevailing.

It's not an illness as such, it is a dependancy as much as drugs and cigarettes are. It is very hard to shake off and it is so easy to fall off the wagon at a time of stress.

It is a disease. If you truly had a relationship with an alcoholic you would be able to see the signs of that.

Oh. 'alement', very funny.
Yes, he sighed, her breasts were voluptuous, but he'd been barred from every where in Glenmorangie, and couldn't Walker home. He wined a little, and felt bitter about the whole thing in the morning.
