When I was 15, 16 and 17 most or I should say almost all places would not hire minorities for the soft summer jobs. I picked strawberries at a rate of 65 cents per crate. I worked in the middle of massive farms, it was always extremely hot and if you took your crate up to checked they would sometimes just dump your whole crate because if you were not fast enough the strawberries on the bottom would get all mushy and were not marketable. My hands were stained all the time and one became sick of the smell of strawberries. It took me a lot of years to enjoy them again.

My worst job ever was dishwashing in a restaurant where the dish machine leaked, and all the drains were in the high points in the floor - which meant I'd spend 8 hours a day in a hot, humid room which was ankle-deep in warm water filled with garbage and caustic chemicals - a pair of sneakers would last about two weeks before completely falling apart. The restaurant was owned, not by a restaurant owner, but by a corporation made up of eight dentists and a podiatrist - all gay - who bought the place so they could turn the attached nightclub into disco where they could dance the night away without having to worry about gay-bashing & other crude behavior. However, they bought the place and spent over a million dollars on the disco conversion at the end of 1979, when the anti-disco backlash was in full swing, so the owners were constantly around, worrying over all the little details of a business they didn't understand (because the one thing they did understand, that th'damn disco was losing them a ton of money, they couldn't do anything about).

Dog sitting for a young Great Dane who's idea of fun was biting me in the butt! It would run across the room and lung at my cheeks. It also liked to "mouth" on the rest of my body! When I'd take it outside to go potty in the wintertime - it'd get all snowy & muddy paws and then it wouldn't let me dry it off when I brought it back in the house and it'd run around on all of the owner's expensive white carpets with muddy paws! I never swore so much in my life! Dumb beast! The last straw was when it tried to bite my "love muscle" if you know what I mean! I quit after that!!

I had a paper route for a weekend. That was all I could take. I had to wake up at 1am to go to the hub to put papers together. The newspaper ink gets all over your hands and dries them out terribley! And there were roughly 100 newpapers I had to put together to deliver. Then I had to schlep them out to my car and drive around a neighborhood that I didn't know too well, using my own gas, and get them all delivered by 7am. It was horrible and the pay was nothing to right home about.

Washed dishes at a restaurant. A dishwasher is the lowest of low in the restaurant hierarchy. They used to call us dish dogs. Fortunately I was only in high school at the time so that little character builder is long in the past.

My first job. I had to work with a deaf person. He was a nice person but he did unsafe things because he couldn't hear and the company just ignored the dangerous things he did. They hired mostly young men and women and had no benefits and no concern for safety at all.
