Waldo is a town in Waldo County Maine, and is named for Samuel Waldo, the holder of a patent on large tracts of land in the area.

His great grandson Waldo (aka "Wally") has a home there, but is seldom seen locally....which is why townsfolk often ask "Where's Waldo?"

Waldo can be seen dressed in a red and white striped shirt and bobble hat, carrying a wooden walking stick, and wearing glasses.

Waldo also has a reputation for popping up in unexpected places, while carrying his walking stick, kettle, mallet, cup, rucksack, sleeping bag, binoculars, camera, snorkel, belt, bag and shovel.

The town is very proud of his international reputation.

Just FYI:

The name `Wally' was most likely borrowed from an early seventies pop festival in-joke, when the call `Wally!' and `Where's Wally?' would go round at nightfall. It may have been the name of a lost sound engineer at the first Glastonbury festival, or a missing person at the 1969 Isle of Wight festival. This was a regular shout at almost any British festival event during the 1970s.
