He shot himself rather than be captured by the Red Army that was storming through Berlin at the time. Coward.

Anyhoo, go rent the film "Downfall." It chronicles Hitler's final days. It's a great watch.

The generally accepted cause of the death of Adolf Hitler on April 30, 1945 is suicide by gunshot and cyanide poisoning. The dual method and other circumstances surrounding the event encouraged rumours that Adolf Hitler may have survived the end of World War II along with speculation about what happened to his remains; however, the 1993 opening of records kept by the Russian KGB and FSB confirmed the widely accepted version of the death of Hitler as described by Hugh Trevor-Roper in his book The Last Days of Hitler published in 1947. The Russian archives did however shed new light on what happened to the cadaver.

Hitler killed himself in April, 1945. He fired a Walter PPK, The same gun that James Bond uses in the movies, into his brain. He also took Cyanide to make sure he was good and dead. His wife Eva Braun died with him from Cyanide as well. Then their bodies were taken outside, pored gasoline on them and lit on fire. The Soviets find the charred remains and took them back to Moscow. Later on the Cranium of Hitler was shown to the public with the bullet hole in the skull.

Also Eva was Married to Hitler BEFORE they died in the bunker.

I actually believe he did both ingested cyanide and shot himself. Afterward he had his aides burn the bodies of both him and his wife lest they fall into Alllied hands and be placed on public display like had happened to Mussolini.

Hitler commited suicide by shooting himself with a pistol thru the mouth into his head. His body was then burned. They recovered a piece of his skull/face years ago.
