I am really confused....My son is 5 months old and the doctor told me today to start introducing baby food to him! I just dont understand how much to give him? She told me keep him on one jar a day of the same food for a couple days then switch! So do i give him one jar of baby food a day and bottles? When do i just strictly give him baby food? How long until he eats two jars a day? What do i feed him first vegetables or fruits? Sorry just a little confused!

Still give your son his regular bottles. Along with one of those bottles try giving him 1 jar of fruits or veggies a day. Here is an example of what I do with m 6 month old son.
7am: 8oz bottle
noon: pears and an 8 oz bottle
4pm: 8 oz bottle
8:00pm 8 oz bottle
11:30: 8 oz bottle
Then the next day I start over. Make sure to only give him one food a day because that way if he's allergic to something you can tell the dr. that today he ate carrots (or whatever he ate). After you have introduced a few foods to him, make sure you switch between orange and green foods. (mondays, wednesdays, and fridays green other days orange for example). You do this so his skin won't turn orange. The best foods to start out with are rice cereal, pears, apples, or bananas. Go to www.gerber.com for help on what to pick. Good Luck!

Hi. Everything with a new baby is a litle confusing! At 5 months old your baby should be started on rice cereal! Then when he does good with that you should move him to 1st foods. Sounds as if your DR wants him starting on 1st foods now...1st stage baby food...is all vegies and fruits. You can pick anything you would like to try him with. The reason they say use only 1 for a few days is to make sure he doesnt become alergic. Like if you gave bannanas today and then carrots tomorrow and he broke out with an allergic reaction you wouldnt know which food it was from. So they say give 3 days before using a new one! Your baby will definately let you know when he has had enough. He will probally take half a jar the first few times, twice a day! YES you continue to give bottles also. Your baby will continue with bottles until 12 months old. Then strictly food and drinks! Hope this helps!

I would end each feeding with a bottle of milk. And I would start with fruits such as apple sauce and pears. Gerber has their baby food numbered with 1 , 2 and 3 and that takes the guess work out of what foods to start with first. Also I believe she is telling you to give him one jar a day of the same food and then switch is so that you will be able to distinguish a food allergy that your baby might have. When I am introducing my son to new foods I usually give him the same food for a week and then I switch. Go to Gerber.com they have a great website that would be helpful to you. Also every baby is different so how much you feed him will depend on his appetite, but I believe one jar a day is sufficient you don't want him to overeat at such an early age. If he seems hungry after a jar of baby food and a bottle of milk I would wait about twenty minutes before I give him any more baby food. It takes our body 15-20 minute to know when we are full.

You need to stick to the same food for at least 3 days to look for allergic reaction. Then after that start a new food for 3 days and so on. You only start giving them 2-3 tsp of food in the begining when you introduce solids. So a jar may last you three days.
You also give your bottles at the same times you did before, just implement a feeding in the monring and maybe one in the evening inbetween the bottles. I would start with cereal for a week or so before giving fruits and veggies.

First off breast milk or formula should still be his primary source of food and nutrition during this time. For a first feeding start with rice cereal, its less likely to produce an allergic reaction. mix 1 part cereal(1 tablespoon is a good way to start) to 5 or 6 parts liquid such as water, breast milk or formula. You want it to be really thin. Offering your baby the "solid" feeding when hes somewhat hungry but not starving or upset. You'll know hes had enough when he turns his head, fusses in protest or blows raspberries with his food at you. It might take several tries for him to get used to eating from a spoon and the new tastes and textures in his mouth. Start off with 1 feeding a day and work your way up to 2-3. Gradually increase the quantity and thickness of the cereal over the next week or 2 then move on to a yellow/orange veggie like carrots, sweet potatoe or squash, you can mix these in with the cereal at first.Get him used to the veggies before the fruits. Be careful with bananas, apples and pears as they can make him constipated. If he gets constipated a little apple juice will help. Introduce these foods slowly. You want to use one new food at a time so you can monitor for allergies or sensitivities. There is no set standard on "how much" just watch your baby for clues as to wether hes had enough. At first only fill the spoon 1/4-1/2 per spoon full. good luck

I would give my baby veggies. i had started her on peas just as much as she wanted. The small jars. The stores sell them in different variety of choices in packs. So after 3 days I will introduce next veggie and so on. After she was OK with veggies then once a week i would give her fruit. I did veggies because I did not want her to not want to eat her veggies. She loves carrots, peas and sweet potatoes and green beans. Along a feeding of veggies I would nurse after about half of hour so that she will be able to digest her veggies. I hope that this helps. Or give her what ever amount of milk that she drinks but do not be surprise if your son does not finish all of milk because he might be full from the solid food. Now that my daughter is 11 months old she eats reular food. I stopped giving her baby food 2 months ago. She just wouldnt eat it until I would give her regular food.

Ok the way i did it i gave my son half a jar in the morning and half a jar at night. start with bananas or rice cerel. He will be up to 2 jars in a few months. by the time he is one or so he will be off the bottle and eating stage 3 or higher. Every child is diffrent. My son was off baby food and onto fingure foods at 9 months but he still got Bottles every now and then. you want to buy the stage 1 foods. Any of them are good for a baby your childs age. Bananas are usaly the best place to start. If you have any other questions feel free to ether IM me or e-mail me. both are in my profile.

I would do baby ceral first in with his fomula or milk (Remember to make the whole on the bottle bigger. Also you might want to start out with Veggies first and then add meats. I normally gave my sons (two of them) about half a jar in the am and half at lunch and another half for super. You baby will let you know if he/she doesn't want it. Also just because he/she doesn't like doesn't mean you shouldn't give it to him/her that just means that you should try it again. Baby food is confussing but remember every baby is diffrent. Try ceral in the am with his bottle and maybe at night if you wish. He is just starting so put a scoop of ceral (bannana ceral will work best because of flavor) And then maybe a jar of baby food at lunch. This is going to be your call. You are the mother remember that. I hope that helped. Also they have feeder bottles for your baby and you might have an easier time with this. When he gets a little bigger you can put friuts and veggies/meat layered for your baby. (seems to do well with the taste and getting them to eat it.

He more than likely wont finish a whole jar when your first starting and I've always been told start with veggies because if you start with sweet stuff they wont want the veggies. Continue to feed him bottles and pick one meal to use the jar food. When bottles no longer keep him full start feeding him more solids.
