first you will need a data cable for your phone that will hook into the usb port on your laptop, next depeding on your provider there's different usernames and password to connect to data thru your phone, for example if you use verzion like i do, however been a while since i used my phone to connect thru the internet but it was something like this for the username was yourphonenumber@3g.net and pasword was like vzw i can't really remember but i can find it again if you have verizon, then you can connect "high" speed for free, well somewhat free, it just uses your min on your plan, if you want me to fine out the exact username and password to connect on the verizon network let me know and i'll get that info for you, hope this helps

You can also use bluetooth to connect and then use the phone as a modem; make sure your service plan supports the use of your phone as a modem and even if it does, it probably won't include VoIP or IM. When you get the connection details from your service provider, make sure you get access to the internet and not just WAP. You will most probably have to add an additional dial string to your pc modem in modem properties.
