Important is a relative concept. If you wanna run alot of games, then faster is better as it will help to decrease load times. If you are using it for school or internet, load time will really not affect your performance very noticeably, since loading primarily occurs when you first open the apps. If you got the money, go for the faster RPM.

the speed of the hard drive does help in the access time that is needed to retrieve data off the hard drive. notbooks are typically 4200 to 5400, desktops and servers range from 5400 to 15,000. at issue is the size of the motor that spinning the hard drive platters. if you can afford the bigger drive with the faster speed go for it. while it may not look like a big differnece you will be saving a few milliseconds off of every io. when you are playing a game, or doing a lot of graphics that can add up very quickly..

Its all relative to what you want to do with your comp. But I recently updated to a higher rpm drive and the difference in speed is noticable. Perhaps you can get the laptop you want and then upgrade to the faster drive if it doesnt perform to your needs. Just a thought.

The faster it spins, the faster it can read and write data, so yes the speed is very important. You will definitely notice a difference between 4200 and 5400 rpm...if you can get 7200, get that.

It does help with the running speed, but also cosume more energy. So pick the side, better operation or longer time on battery?

ALSO. . . .
the faster speeds are louder, create more heat, and eat up battery power much faster.
with laptops you are always juggling and compromising features so that they match YOUR PERSONAL needs
