A sentences is better than a thousand word, at times a word is better than a sentence.
Sure it builds self confidence I will personally recommend you to write one sentence daily.

I personally think that using a "learning opportunity" as a punishment wrongly associates punishment with learning in a child's mind. In other words, they could start to enjoy learning less because of its association with punishment. This goes for forced reading, book reports, sentance writing, ect... You want your kids to enjoy reading and writing, not see it as a punishment.
I don't usually use punishment except for in extreme cases. I find it just doesn't work as a teaching tool very well. Positive reinforcement works a lot better IMO. But there are some times when punishments are necessary--still, I would use time outs rather than writing as a punishment. I just think you are sending the wrong message there.

I don't think so.......I make my 5 year old do it.........It gives her some discipline, plus, she gets to practice her penmanship and spelling.
