it and now i can HEAR that the motor is working but still nothing... Does it take a while for it to start sucking up the water then putting it back into the tank? or will i have to buy a new filter?

Did you clean the impeller? The thing that spins to suck up water? If that gets stuck / clogged, you won't get any suction.
Is your water level high enough, and no air is getting into the intake tube?

Take a cup of water an put it in the filter or two cups til you hear it bubbling. If that doesn't work you need a new one. (But, that's how you prime a filter)

Pour some water into the filter and it should take it from there. Thats how mine are.
