Did you mean peonies?? Make sure soil is well drained and use some fertilizer. Check for any pests on stalks and petals (besides the ants).

I would water it and see if it comes clean or perhaps it has rotted and you might need to grow another one. Generally they don't grow black they are either pink or brown.
