I have started to write a couple of songs, and I want to learn to play in instrument to sing with. Piano and guitar are offered at my college, which of these, or perhaps any other suggestions would be best to learn to aid me with my songs? I played a little of the banjo the other day and it was pretty amazing. So anyways any ideas, or perhaps and tips that you would want to give would be helpful.

Which ever between the piano and the guitar suits your song style is what I'd recommend.

I write lyrics and would be willing to discuss your lyrics with you.

I really can't stress how much of a life changing event picking up a guitar was for me. It changed me more than anything I have ever done. You can really make any kind of music you want with it, more than a piano in my opinion. It's a very versitile insturment because there are electric, acoustic, and classical guitars. That's just my opinion, but I started 8 years ago and I play everyday now.

Piano. guitar is fun too. but for composition, piano. simply because you not only learn treble and bass notes but you learn to play them together. you learn more of what sounds go together and also how to combine different key signatures and other important elements.
I would go with piano. good luck
