If your context is modern physics,then the answer is no. The notion of space outside of the context of time is basically meaningless. Space only exists bound with time, as space-time. Space-time is not the absence of matter, but rather all matter is space-time.

No, it's not. Space is mostly empty, however.

Even with all the stars and galaxies there are vast areas between stars. Light from the Sun takes 8 minutes to reach Earth but 4.3 years to the nearest solar system.

Space is the precursor to matter.
Space is empty until the quantum effect begins the process that produces matter and evolves into the universe and us.
