If Trammell gets in, it opens the doors for hundreds of others who had only a handful of All-Star appearances and Gold Gloves, with no MVP's.

The Hall has been a little too lenient. It has to be for the elite, larger than life players. Would more than half the fans of baseball even recognize Trammell walking down the street?

A few more seasons like 1987 and I would have said yes.

Alan Trammell
BA-285 HR-185 H-2365 RBI-1003

RF-4.47 FLD%-.977

20 seasons and only 2293 games played?

Best DP combo? >he only turned 100 DP's in a season 1 time

These are not HOF numbers

He was another good but not great player. The HOF should be for the greats of the game, not the very good. There are a few guys in the HOF who should not be. Ozzie Smith being one of them.

Later: I hate to shatter anyone's delusion, but, baseball is all about the numbers. To answer the question of have I ever "seen" a baseball game>Only thousands of games, starting in the 1950's>I've also only written 6 books on the modern history of baseball (1946-2006)>in which I study the "numbers" of every player>every year.

Ozzie Smith - 19 seasons
BA-262 SLG-328 HR-28 RBI-793>Not HOF numbers>A "great" baseball player plays both offense and defense>Only great players should be in the HOF(IMHO)

As a Tiger fan, I'd say absolutely yes. His career I think was better than Ozzie Smith's. Unfortunately Tram didn't take to the field at Tiger Stadium and do cartwheels and a backflip.
Unfortunately, I fear both him and Whitaker will not make it into Cooperstown. It's too bad, but that's the way it is.

Should he be? More than likely. Will he be? No. His career got too married to that of Lou Whitaker's. Trammell stayed fit and in the game while Lou opened a crawdad hut in Florida and got fatter than he already was. Now before georgie peorgie or anyone else gets their nuts inna twist over my answer... Alan Trammell is "my Tiger", but i know folks who would pick "Sweet Lou" over Alan anytime.

Absolutely.

A great player who only got better with age. A pleasure to watch on the diamond and a class act all the way around.

He should be in. The Tigers should also retire #3 for him. They should have done that already. If they could retire #23 for Willie Horton, they can retire #3 for Trammell.
