use PEMDAS or Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.
most people think you multiply then divide or add then subtract, but that is NOT how it is done. My class had about a million lectures about this when we were learning the order of operations.
P= parenthesis
E= exponents
M= multiplication/D=division [they are on the same line beacause you do which ever operation comes first in the problem. ex. 5x4/2=20/2=10 and 6/2x4=3x4=12]
A=addition/S=subtraction[same as M/D. ex. 5+7-4=12-4=8 and 15-4+2=11+2=13]
7x6+[5+3]/4
=7x6+8/4
=42+8/4
=42+2
=44
Hope this helps=)

Please(parenthesis)
Excuse(Exponents)
My(Multiplication)
Dear(Division)
Aunt(Addition)
Sally(Subtraction)
That is the order.Multiplication, division and addition,subtraction can go either way.
EX: (3-2)x6+4/2
you would do 3-2 first which is 1
then u do 1x6 cus multiplication is next which is 6
then u divide 4 and 2 cus division comes before multiplication
then you add 2 and 6 which is 8 and your answer!

You have to learn which operations must be done first, then next, and last. That info is in your book. The examine an expression which will have several operations going on at the same time, like, addition, multiplication and exponentiation. So figure out which one to do first, and do it that way. You have to learn this, you can't short cut it.

Do it in the following sequence:
Work out what's in Brackets first,
Then work out any other abnormal functions, such as powers and square roots.
Then work out any divisions
Then, work out any multiplications
Then work out any additions,
Then work out any subtractions.
Job done.

You have access to a math book, use it. There are no substitutes for homework. You can believe it or not, your choice.
