Legalization means just what it says, that something is now legal. With decriminalization something is still illegal, but there is little to no punishment for it.

Legalization is when something is made legal.

Decriminalization is when punishments are reduced for specific crimes. For example: Nevada is trying (I don't know if it passed) to change the punishment for possession of pot from life in prison to a more "reasonable" punishment.

If you are talking about weed,the difference is the level of punishment.

It would still be illegal, but nobody will get jail time for smoking a joint. Maybe something like a fine.
