When its dark, I see things, like a type of hologram effect. They can be people, balls, shapes, shadows etc. It only happens when the lights are dimmed. I have been seeing them for about 10 years and sometimes they can be quite scary.

Any ideas what it is can be as I am totally sick of it.

Just to add that these things i see are sooo vivd. literally down to the time that is on a watch on a mns wrist and the writing from teh makers of his shoes. I have to turn the light on to see if its real. I have woken up wqith figures lying next to me in bed and actually thought there was someone there. its awful. its not generally nice thing. i can even get out of bed and be amongst them so its not just my vision being blurred or anythign. even if i close my eyes for 10 minutes and open them again its all still going on as it was 10 mins previous

You are suffering from a condition called schizophrenia. You should check yourself into the nearest insane asylum as soon as possible.

My sister has had the same problem, ever since she was a child. At first no-one believed her & thought that she was just trying to get attention. Now she is going on 35, & a few years ago she was diagnosed with schizophrenia, among other things. She has been on serious medication since then. The amazing thing is that she is married & has two children.
I would suggest talking to a psychiatrist. This is probably the only way you will be able to find out for sure what your problem is.
Good luck to you...
I can't imagine living life that way. If it happened to me I would call a cab & take it straight to the psychiatric ward & admit myself. (I'm not intending to insult you with that comment, either....that is seriously what I would do.)

You do not say what age you are or if you have any visual problems that you know of. My mother has bouts such as these....lasting a few weeks and then subsiding for a time before the next bout. She suffers from macular degeneration and has been told it is connected. So maybe a visit to a doc...eye specialist would be in order. My mother sees things like children playing, red double deckers, etc.

i have exactly the same, its really freaky! I see spiders (probably just my phobia!) that aren't there, can actually see it crawling and its really realistic - so much so, that i have to turn the lights on to see if its really there or a figment of my imagination! I also hear voices just as im dropping off to sleep - really really clearly. Iv had this all my life and iv never been able to figure out what causes it or how to stop it. Sorry, i know im not much help, but at least you know you're not alone!

I believe the best person to ask would be an ophthamologist. This sounds like it might be a physical phenomena. I know that when the light is right, I also see auras or the periphery turns purple. My eye doctor explained why to me. If he has no answer, perhaps you might want to seek a psychiatrist. In the meantime, I believe that I would attempt to control the quality of light in order to avoid this effect.

All the answers so far are suggesting this is a physical problem. Have you ever wondered if you were gifted? Have you tried talking to these people, maybe they are from the after life. I am not joking, you may have a sixth sense, you are extremely lucky if you do.

Try not to focus on them. Turn the lights on until you are ready to go to sleep. Use lamps and get timers for them so they turn off automatically after you fall asleep. You can set them to turn back on before you wake up.
