He was a general for the Confederacy during the Civil War... Lincoln gave Lee the option to be a general in the Union army at the start of the war but he turned it down because he was loyal to his home state of Virginia. He was the general in charge of Confederate forces at Gettysburg, PA. He eventually surrendered on 9 April 1865 at Appomattox.

If not for Lee, the Civil War would have ended much sooner. At the start of the war, the Confederates were outnumbered 3 to 1, and barely armed. Robert E. Lee's mind was about the only asset they had to work with. Basically, he did for the Confederacy during the Civil War all the same things Washington did for America during the Revolution. And then, at the end of the war, he made it clear to the disbanded Confederate military that he wanted them to accept defeat peacefully and try to get along with the Northerners. Most Southerners at that time felt a strong sense of loyalty to Lee, and listened to this advice. His attitudes did a lot to help in the healing of the country after the war.
