Do a look book.. basically, go through all magazines, websites, and save/cut out pictures that really appeal to you in each outfit.
Then, lay out all the pictures, and look for similar themes between all the pictures.
Are they all bohemian? Classic? preppy? Glam? Rock?...
What colours are they using? Only black and white? A lot of warm reds oranges and yellows?
That'll help you determine what your personal identity/style is, and what you gravitate to the most.

Good for you for not wanting to copy the same old trends as everyone else! If I were you, I'd look through magazines and cut out or mark pictures of things you would buy if you could (so you choose things you'd actually wear). Also, think about your current wardrobe and what you feel most comfortable in and what colors look best on you.
You'll start to see a pattern of what you like & probably be able to define a few looks that you like and work them in with what you already have. You'll also learn what isn't your look and what you shouldn't buy even if you kind of admire it. The great thing about fashion now is that people who are truly fashionable don't just stick to one look, they tend to mix elements and experiment. It's perfectly OK (and sometimes better) to not follow a particular trend, and besides, there's more than one look that's popular now.
Hope this helps, and I'm sure you have better style sense than you think you do!

Fashion magazines, going to stores and looking at what is in style. Seeing what your friends are wearing that is stylish and appropriate and then write down your favorite colors, and favorite items of clothing and then go shopping. If you feel insecure, take a friend along that has a good style sense and dresses nice. She'll help you. H & M Clothing stores are very nice. Have a sales person help you to get starting selecting some nice outfits. I think you should have the following items in your wardrobe.
2 pairs of dress jeans - medium blue in boot cut
1 pair of dress boots
2 pairs of high heels
6 basic tops in all colors
1 Short Jacket
1 Denim Jacket
2 Pairs of Dress Pants 1 black and 1 brown
1 Leather Jacket in black or brown or luggage color
2 dresses
That is just a start. Get out there and find your identity. It will come to you believe me.

Fashion isn't all about art. It's about being original and being able to dress in a way that flatters you. Wear what you are comfortable in and makes you feel confident. Wear what flatters you--what colors, what cuts, what styles. It might take a little experimenting and a little time, but you will find yourself.

As far as your own identity you know in general what you like, keep one rule in mind: never under any condition ever OVER- ACCCESSORIZE, look in the mirror before you leave and then take at least one thing off.

Be original. By all means, stay in fashion, but don't try to copy everyone else. Try to find unique, one-of-a-kind stuff that YOU like.
