I'm reading a book, and there's mention of "I offered a pound for this", etc., and I was wondering if there's any way to find out what money was worth in the mid-late 1800's in England, either in wages or purchase power.

could vary between 67 and 70 pounds depending on the retail price index, if you have a coin I advice not to sell it.
