Psychotherapy is generally done with the participant in a relaxed (alomst hynotic) state, free associating about their experiences, dreams, ect. So no, generally this could not be done in groups.
Group therapy has a long tradition though. One of the best things about group therapy is that it underscores how normal the feeling or behavior being treated is, making one feel less like a "freak" for dealing with that particular issue. It also reinforces the therapy by giving the participant a group of support to draw from rather than just the psychologist. In this way, an individual is responsible for themselves, but can also feel a great sense of accomplishment for helping and supporting others in the group, and receive that support in return.
However, there are some drawbacks for group therapy. First, not everyone has the social skills to interact in groups, nor do some people feel comfortable doing so, and so they can behave less naturally. Also, groups include social pressures which can effect the therapy as a whole. Finally, while a therapist will not divulge the personal information of their clients, there is nothing to prevent others in the group from doing so, so the level of privacy that one would get from one-on-one is not there in a group.
Hope this helps.

Yes, it is called group therapy (or family therapy).

The benefits:
Others know what you are going through because they share the same problem (like alcoholics anonymous).
Others can model appropriate behavior for overcoming a problem.
Emotional support.
Peer pressure makes you want to do better and not let the group down.

Drawbacks:
Not as much one-on-one attention and feeling unduly pressured by others.

Therapy yes... psychotherapy.. I dont think so. Just because psychotherapy can take years and is very intense on shedding light on repressed memories.

Probably the main advantage of group therapy is that its simply cheaper.
