In Windows, right click start, choose Explore, and use the search feature. You can search words and phrases, dates files were created, etc.

If you wrote it recently, you could look in Start->My Recent Documents, or the recent documents list provided with the program you used to write the story (if there is one e.g. Word has a list on the File menu).

Do an advanced search for files that were made on certain dates (if you remember the date you wrote it). it will narrow down your search considerably.

If you remember a phrase that is in it you can search within files using the find files or folders too.

If you're using a Unix OS, just use grep.

you go to search in the computer and you put the name of the story and then its location then wait and then click on all of the possible files.

If you remember a line go to your search and all files and folders containing that line
