It really is hard to understand. I just finished a graduate level psychopathologu course. It raised more questions than it answered.

because most people wouldn't self harm, it's seen as a masochistic act. Most people don't have the same psychological problems as a self harmer. It would be better if it were more understood. If you are a self harmer, or know someone that is, it would be a good idea to enlighten those that would like to understand. I hope I've explained myself properly.

Because it has only recently become something known to the general public. People who don't do it don't understand why someone would do it. In time, more people will understand the psychology of it and be sympathetic toward what is bothering a cutter. Until then, realize that it will be freaking people out for a while.

Its a hard thing to get your head round ... most people go out of there way to avoid harm ... Just as you have dificulty understanding the way other people think sometimes , the same goes for the rest of us ...
The great thing is tho ... no matter what your way of thinking is ... you can guarentee that there is someone out there that will understand ...
If thats what your looking for ... dont loose hope ... your not alone and if your seeking help ... your bound to find it .. if you look

One that does not SI has a hard time to wrap their minds around why someone would SI to feel better. Often people think that hurting oneself is the last thing that would make them feel better. But those people are not in the state of mind that one that hurts themselves are.
A lot of people dissociate when they SI, so they do not feel the pain of doing it as intense... where as if you know someone that SI and you try it then chances are you will think that it REALLY hurts and you cannot wrap your mind around it all. But they do it for a reason. whether it be to block the feelings that they have or to forget things in their lives, they do it to cope and a lot of people do not understand that at all, and some are not wanting to.

Because those who don't self harm don't know why you do it. It's the same as seeing a foreigner do something they have always done in their country and doing it here. It's something different to others.

There's many illnesses/diseases/compulsions that are part of everyday life and we just have to appreciate that people don't have the knowledge or experience to deal with some things.
The classic similarities are:
Why is he/she an alcoholic
Why is he/she a gambler
Why does he/she smoke
In my experience only people who have experienced similar problems can really understand a persons perspective!!

Do you mean like blood brothers who slash their own arms then press them together to mix their blood. They dont sterilize their knives and hence cause an infection. I dont think they realize.
