We are looking to go to Orlando with kids ages 13, 9, 8, 3, and 5 months. Is Universal Studios a good place for kids? The Disney Parks are more suited toward kids overall, right? Also is it better to rent a car and stay nearby or stay on the Disney grounds (we have done this before).

Disney is a given - you know you'll kids will love it and you don't need to rent a car. But if you're looking for something different, Islands of Adventure at Universal Studios has some great attractions for kids - even the younger ones. If you haven't been there yet, I'd check it out. They're also running some amazing ticket discounts. If you don't want to rent a car, many of the hotels located on/near International Drive or Major Blvd. have free transportation to Universal.

Okay, i've been there 3 times along with Disneyworld and to Disneyland once. Universal is very kid friendly, although many of the rides there are for older kids. There are places there like Seussland where there are many entertaining kids rides. Disney is the ultimate place to go, but Universal is good too, but I would only recommend the Island of Adventure rides for your 13, 9, and 8 year olds, but something good for all would be Shrek 4-D, E.T adventure, etc.

Here i'll explain them:

E.T. Adventure: you go into a dark fake foresty place to wait in line so it may be a little frightening at first. But you sit on bikes that are stuck to a platfrom, and you slowly are airlifted above E.T. scenes, it's pretty cool.

Shrek 4-D: A 3-D show were stuff will fly at you, like when Donkey sneezes, you get wet. But i'm warning you, it does shake a little.

Jaws: Freaks me out personally, 5 words for you - SIT NEAR THE RIGHT SIDE!

Jimmy Neutron: Love it, but it makes my sister and my dad motion sick, it jerks back and forth.

Back to the Future: Rode it in California, um, NO! BAD! It makes you feel really naucious.

A lot of these things are good, but just make sure you don't take your 3 year old or 5 month year old on any Island of Adventure things, 9 and 8 maybe, 13 is okay.

My very favorite topic. I recommend Disney for your kids, hands down. Universal is o.k., but it is not the magical place WDW is. Universal is more thrill rides, and if I wanted that I could go to Six Flags and save some money.

Yes, the Disney parks are suited more towards the kids overall, but they do not forget the big kids and the parents. There are so many attractions for all ages, you can't go wrong. When staying at Disney, staying on the grounds IS A MUST!!! There are some deals out there for lodging outside of the Disney resorts, but you get what you pay for. Staying on the grounds gives you the opportunity to take advantage of all that Disney has to offer, including the perks available only to resort guests. Each day one or two of the parks offer Extra Magic Hours to the resort guests. One park opens early, and one stays open late. Now, with the ages of your really little ones, the open late hours might be tough. However, you can take turns and maybe the older kids and one adult can go to take advantage of the late time. The park is closed to everyone but resort guests who have gotten a special wristband. The more popular attractions stay open, and you can ride them as much as you want.

Also, staying at one of the resorts will guarantee entrance into the parks. If a park is crowded, sometimes they shut down entrance to that park. Resort guests are never denied access, however. I have actually seen this, as there was a line to get into the Magic Kingdom the last time I was there, but I walked right in. You also get unlimited use of the transportation system. While some of the other resorts offer shuttle service, you are at their mercy in terms of schedule, and the ride can be up to 1/2 hour or more. I have even heard that some resorts charge extra for shuttle service. With use of the Disney transportation, you wont have to worry about that at all. If you are driving, again, you wont have to pay for parking. You can leave your car at the resort and hop the shuttle to whatever park you want. Since you mentioned renting a car, Disney offers Magical Express service to and from your resort to Orlando Int'l Airport. They even deliver your luggage directly to your room, and the service is free.

When you buy passes, make sure to buy the park hopper option. It does cost a little more, but you will be able to come and go as you please to any of the parks, instead of being stuck at one per day. Remember the crowd I mentioned? If one park is crowded, say Magic Kingdom, you can shift gears, hop on the monorail and go to Epcot center. Without that option you don't have that flexibility.

All in all, I truly believe that you get more bang for your buck staying at Disney than just about anywhere else. They treat everyone like a king, whether you stay in the value resorts or the deluxe. If you are looking for more info, I recommend two resources that we always use. First, go to www.disneyworld.com. You can get a quote right online for your trip, including the passes and airfare if you wish. Second, pick up the Birnbaum's guide to WDW. There are many guide books out there, but this is the one my family and I have found works best for us. They also have a Birnbaum's guide to Disney for kids by kids that your children might like to check out before you go. I picked one up for my kids, and they can't put it down. Luckily we are going in a few weeks, because they are bouncing off the walls!!!

Hope I could help. Have a great trip!
