Ancestory.com or Rootsweb.com are good places to start. With e-mail you can contact people from all over the world using these resources. My father has tracked our family tree so far back (mostly from Northwestern Europe) that it would take 5,000 pages to print the tree.

I find my west indian heritage is very hard to track. Records were not kept well and stories were not handed down through generations to help.
I have no idea what to do.

Try ancestory.com - it's run by the church of the latter day saints (mormons). They have incredible records from all over the country!
