93 jeep cherokee engine started jumping when idling at a stop sign. Now the engine completely stops running when I brake for a light or goes below a certain RPM. Is this an engine or transmission issue? Or something easier to fix? How much should it cost if I take it to a mechanic?

It's an automatic.

Usually it is idle speed, and that is very easy to fix. Just find it on the carborator and turn it up a little bit until it stops dying. You can do it, it's easy.

Yeah it could be a tune up or a dirty air filter or a clogged fuel filter causing this problem. But you may still have a bad Mass Air Flow sensor on the engine as well. These are common on the older cars/trucks with higher mileage. Most of these items are simple and cheap repairs. The tough part is to find a decent honest mechanic that can not only diagnosis the problem the 1st time, but to repair it the 1st time as well. I have seen too many mechanics just replace parts and this is very costly. Ask your family and friends where they take their cars for repairs and then take your car to the one who you feel comfortable with.
good luck.......

1.The idle can be set too low. Or
2. (depending on if its a manual or automatic transmission;) the carborator or fuel injectors may be clogged.
You could try the fuel injector cleaners that are sold at gas station and/or auto parts stores or go to the professionals have have the line flushed.

My boyfriend's '93 Grand Cherokee had this problem, so we changed the fuel filter and it stopped doing that. It might help you. Good luck.

Check your spark plugs, if they're gunked up that could be the problem (Not getting enough spark).
Shouldn't be that big of a problem, if you know a little about cars, you should be able to do it yourself.
It's not the tranny, and the engine itself it fine, it sounds like it's just a part you can replace on the engine.

Engine :) , 77% guess it has something to do with airflow (mass airflow sensor, or filter clogged ) 22% fuel problem(clogged injectors , fuel filter {good probability}) 1% user error :) (not likely but hey I have seen some strange things happen) Good luck

could be your idle set too low, or something clogged in your injection. I would take to a mechanic to just have an estimate done.

sounds like it might be a fuel problem try starting with a new fuel filter maybe even some dry gas it might got a bad tank of gas if that dont work it might be fuel throttle poss. sencer but more than likely not

It Kind of sounds like you might have a torque converter that is not unlocking properly. (provided it is an automatic trans...) or it might be time for a clutch (or a slave cylinder)if it is a stick. Take it to your mechanic for diagnostics.
