Yes it does seem like that sometimes, well spotted but my friend actually likes her toast 'to be cremated beyond recognition'. Sometimes you need to set the toaster to high because you might be using frozen bread or doing pop tarts or another type of bread that might need longer to brown.

The fresher the bread, the more moist it is.
You must have noticed that the same setting doesn't toast the same every time its used.
Its all down to the moisture in the bread.
You'll probably find that just baked bread will be absolutely fine on the highest setting.

My husband puts frozen waffles in the toaster, and you need the higher setting to get it just right!

Actually, the burn feature only works on dry, old or stale bread.
If your bread is moist it may take to pushes to toast it:0)

Technically, it's a way to test your smoke alarm! My family know their meal is ready when our smoke alarm is going off! And eveytime my husband gets the frying pan out, our dog hides behind my legs - sure sign the smoke alarm will sound and the poor creature is terrified of it.

Some people just like their bread charred...

Maybe they crave that "just out of the volcano flavor" - without all the lava...
