It is supposed to be a corridor in space where you can travel a great distance (hundreds of light years) in a short period of time(several minutes).

A worm hole is just a theory. Some scientist say that if you go into a black hole, you will come out of a white hole in a different part of the universe, but at the same time as you left. This means that it might be possible to travel faster than the speed of light. The above is a very unthrough explanation of worm holes, if you want more, go to wikipedia

In physics, a wormhole is a hypothetical topological feature of spacetime that is essentially a 'shortcut' through space and time. A wormhole has at least two mouths which are connected to a single throat. If the wormhole is traversable, matter can 'travel' from one mouth to the other by passing through the throat. While there is no observational evidence for wormholes, spacetimes containing wormholes are known to be valid solutions in general relativity.

A twin pair of theoretical objects (never observed, but physically possible) invisibly connected so that something thrown into one wormhole mouth will instantly come out of the other mouth, no matter their separation in space and time.

These could be used for time travel, but travel options would be limited and maintaining the wormhole opening would be very hard, since physics says the two mouths would collapse very shortly after having been created.

And it's science fiction with no basis in fact or reality.
