The greatest book I read at that age was, 'Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret' by Judy Blume. It deals with girls getting their first period and the things you learn from your girlfriends at that age. The protagonist, Margaret Simon, wishes she could fill out her training bra like her best friend does.

It is about those rites of passage for adolescent and pre-adolescent girls in this country. I'll tell you: when I read your question, it was the first thing that came to mind: I still recall the wondrous effect it had on me, and believe that this book is one of the reasons I became an English major and a voracious reader.

To review the book (and buy it cheap), go to:

Read it first, and then let her have at it; she'll love it.

Good Luck!

If she hasn't read anything by L.M. Montgomery, give her the Anne books.

If she likes Monty Python type humor, anything by Terry Pratchett.
