Ancestry.com and tracing your DNA would help. I would also suggest talking to family members to see what info they have. i started looking into my background about three years ago and found out that one of my cousins had already been looking into our family history for a few years so I was able to get a lot of info from her.

Ask your grandpa to find out which root you are from and start looking from there.

genealogy.com just make sure you know full names and maiden names of your grandparents etc.
