It all depends on the company...
1.) Some companies will give the employee the first one for free and they would have to pay for the rest on their own.
2.) Companies would make them pay for it, but at a discounted rate.
3.) They would give them the uniforms and make them pay, example they will take $10.00 per pay check until its paid off..

For the most part 2 uniforms just to start out then you can buy more after 6 months or so...

Depends. My first job (lifeguard) they supplied one guard suit and we had to buy more if we wanted more (they were only mandatory on weekends so 1 was reasonable). I waited tables and they didn't provide ANY uniforms or compensation for buying our own. It sucked really bad, especially since they were really picky about what we wore. Currently I do not have a uniform, but my coworkers do (I'm administrative and they are EMT's). I think they get 2 or 3 full uniforms (pants, t shirts, button down shirts) and they are welcome to buy more uniforms and other acceptable shirts (long sleeve t shirts & sweatshirts that can be worn, but are not provided). It really depends on the employer.

My Dad's company offers a uniform and cleaning for $7 per week. They start out with 2-3 sets, but now he's collected several.
