Well, two things happened, first is that you most likely sucked water into the air intake, which cut off oxygen to the cylinders, and second is you probably got the distributor/coils/whatever type of igniton the car has wet, which caused a short and stopped the igniton. Fortunately, all you have to do is let it dry out, if you want pull the distributor cap and make sure it is dry, and if you have enclosed type spark plugs, which i mean ones that sit way down in the head of the car, Hemi style, you may want to shine a light down there and see if you see water, BUT DO NOT REMOVE THE PLUGS!!!! This will cause all the water to run into your cylinders, and you don't want that!! Also if it won't start, remove the air intake hose at the throttle body and spray a lil bit of starting fluid in there, and start the car, it will displace the water and give it a "nitrous shot" to get it started. let it run 10 minutes or so untill ti is at full operating temp, and theat will usually burn off all the water, but check the distributor as I said before starting it.

It depends on how much water got into the combustion chamber. Most car have the air intake located in such a way that you can't pick up a large enough volume of water to destroy you motor. Car that have had cold air intakes put on them are at a much greater risk of sucking up water and destroying the motor.

You probably just saturated the distributor. This is no major thing. Just get a some WD 40 and spray it down really good, as this will displace the water. No, this did not damage your car. Good Luck!

Don't drive through huge puddles! Once engine dries it will probably be okay, but splashing cold water on a hot engine could cause damage.

If your car did not restart at all, chances are water went through the tail pipe and into the engine. This can be a costly repair bill.

Don't stress, you probably just got water in your distributor cap. Take the cap off and spray some WD-40 in it. I'd also change the air filter.
