Science and technology as we know it today has only been around a few hundred years. Superstition has been around since man first climbed down from the trees and stopped throwing poo at one another.

Causality reduces to synchronicity.
Even though "we" have a grasp of the mechanics of complex objects, for the most part we aren't engineers or mechanics-- we really don't know how anything works on a physical level.
So how does the microwave work?
Um.. I hit the button... and... umm.... it's magic?
You will get an "i don't know" explanation for just about every everyday object -- so a person really doesn't KNOW the causal mechanisms in their own car though they drive it everyday, and yet know-how to use it...
Even when we put our mechanics caps on, we still never see any necessary connections in the world. Certain events tend to precede others with greater regularity than others.
Prediction is superstition all the way down.

Most people are simply too ignorant to appreciate the profound difference between belief and knowledge. It's also far easier to believe an obvious superstition than to discover the actual Truth. Religious conservatives have a long history of persecuting those who dare to seek the truth. Those who are smart enough to discover the truth are seldom brave enough to stand up to a world of ignorant bullies.

Old ways die hard. People are trained from birth to accept or have faith without every getting a chance to question anything - Take religion - there can't be that many single gods out there - they can't all be right - however scientific method tells us they can all be wrong - the weaker the mental capacity the more likely they have a crutch - for most it's religion

because science isn't the be all and end all of our existence. This current focus on science at the EXPENSE of art is the reason we are changing into a more militant, aggressive peoples. The ancient Greeks understood that sport and play needed to be balanced.
I believe the same needs to happen with science and imagination.

Because our great advances still cannot explain where we came from or how we came to be standing on a spinning ball orbiting an even bigger ball of fire. Given our circumstances I think people should probably be even more superstitious.
