There was an interesting article in the Economist last year regarding the U.S. lobbyists who put an end to the medical research trials of marijuana, simply because they wanted it to be deemed "bad". The studies had not yet been conducted to a point of conclusion, and the lobbyists simply banned the research, claiming there was "no medical benefit what-so-ever". This was in the face of multiple international studies showing otherwise.

Here's an excerpt:

"Medical marijuana

The medical uses of cannabis
Apr 27th 2006
From The Economist print edition

IF CANNABIS were unknown, and bioprospectors were suddenly to find it in some remote mountain crevice, its discovery would no doubt be hailed as a medical breakthrough. Scientists would praise its potential for treating everything from pain to cancer, and marvel at its rich pharmacopoeia—many of whose chemicals mimic vital molecules in the human body. In reality, cannabis has been with humanity for thousands of years and is considered by many governments (notably America's) to be a dangerous drug without utility.… "

I think it's a highly political thing here in the U.S. - probably linked to the pharmaceutical companies, which rule our nation.

They don't seem to have big problems with it in Holland, where it's legal.

because they cannot stop people from using it if they were honest and objective about it. I can't seem to understand why you would make alcohol legal - which can kill you through overdose - but not cannabis which has no proven negative long term effects. (that's not counter-propaganda, either)

Here's some stupid trivia for you though...

Did you know the term "marijana" is not a medical or scientific term for the drug at all but rather an old mexican "dirt slang" term for the plant? It was made popular in the united states by women's leagues and various other action groups looking to demoralize and criminalize anyone who regularily and openly smoked it. There was, after all, once upon a time when you could walk down Main St. smoking your spliff with no legal recourse.

So there you go, free trivia, the term "marijana" was the first socio-political insult to the cannabis culture. Now, can someone give me a lighter, I've misplaced mine again...

I find nothing wrong with a little here and there. If you're using it for a medical reason, good for you. In my opinion, a couple hits before bedtime is probably more effective and less addictive than taking xanax, valium, or some sort of prescription sleep aid. As long as you're living your life, doing what you need to do, why not? Same as having a glass of wine to help you unwind. The stigma attached to marijuana is ridiculous. I recently smoked a little for some bad back pain I was having. I have no medical insurance, and it was cheaper and easier for me to get my hands on a little of that, and guess what? Worked like a charm. And it's not addictive.

I believe there are tons of medicinal uses for marijuana and living in California where medical marijuana is legal I know quite a few people who have been prescribed it. I don't think it's wrong if you aren't abusing it and I certainly think it's probably better for you than taking a ton of man made chemical drugs. Some people just aren't educated about it's medicinal properties and think it's just an illicit drug like Cocaine - which isn't the case at all. There are people who have cancer or other illnesses and they greatly benefit from being able to use marijuana (which is natural), instead of having to take a ton of pills which kill their organs.

Do you have some sickness that the doctor would prescribe it, or have you been smoking for so long that that is the only way to get some sleep.
