After watching those Fred Phelps protests and getting a little angry over their invasion of privacy on dead soldier's funerals, I wondered if it was infringing upon their freedom of religion.

In this case, does freedom of speech or protest infringe upon the freedom of religion where prayers are being read and a ceremony is being conducted in the name of Christianity?

Freedom of religion has to do with the practice of one's religion. Those despicable people are exercising their freedom of speech. Interrupting a funeral is not violating someone's freedom of religion; it is, as you say, invasion of privacy. But even then I don't think it's illegal, as long as they are on permitted property.

Those protests had nothing to do with religion. They had everything to do with disrespect of the dead soldiers family to hold whatever type of funeral for their dead loved one. The protests were about this young persons being involved in Iraq, which is what they were really protesting! Because they intruded on the families right to privacy in burying their dead, a law was passed that kept them 500 feet from the site of the funeral. Very good law! No one has the right to infringe on the right to bury your loved one in peace & dignity.

It is in the nature of freedom that pople will do things that don't meet the approval of others. We tolerate that because curtailing that freedom is a slippery slope. It boils down to this: The price of freedom is some discomfort.
