Sunlight strikes the tropics at closer to a 90 degree angle. With the tilt of the Earth's axis, regions closer to the poles experience seasons as the sun's rays strike the planet at more or less oblique angles, depending upon the time of year -- and where we are in our orbit around the sun -- whereas the equatorial zone gets steady, direct sun all year-round.
