It is a matter of campared to what other location....
Naperville is expensive. If you are coming from most any other suburban metro area, you will think it is expensive. If you are coming from a small town/rural area, you will think it is outrageous. If you are coming from a California big city region, you may think it is comparable or in some cases, reasonable.

It's very high and I'm very bewildered by this.
If you look at the old part of town, what is left of it now that the developers have been busy doing teardowns to put up McMansions, it is, indeed, a very pretty old town with a distinctive look, but historically it was a poor town, populated mainly by the employees of Kroehler Furniture, and it shows. You're not going to fine a lot of fine old mansions, the way you will in the Lakefront neighborhoods along the North Shore.
Get away from that very small section, and what's left is mostly nondescript and rather flimsy tickytacky thrown up in the section of the Chicago metro area most often visited by tornadoes. Do you really want to sweat that out every spring?
The old time inhabitants are very nice, but don't expect that you're really going to get to know them. The locals keep to themselves, in part because that's just how the local culture is - nice, but in a reserved way - and because a lot of the newcomers haven't exactly been respectful of the local culture.
Housing is the one thing that is pricey. Food, on the other hand, is fairly reasonable and of reliably good quality. There are a few entertainment venues, some of them not bad, which tend to be far less expensive than those in Chicago, and more dining options than visitors tend to expect, prices tending to be on what would be considered the upper end of the lower scale in Chicago (say, about $20 per entree).
I don't know how long that's going to last. Naperville seems to have been relatively hard hit by downsizing and outsourcing, judging from what can be seen around town, so with less money circulating than usual, costs are probably being held down on almost everything but housing, which seems to be in a bubble waiting to burst, prices having been driven up by speculation based in little more than unreasonable euphoria, a la the tulip craze. Unsold McManions are easily found in large numbers, and there really is no clear rationale for the development.
Yes, the public schools are dramatically better than those in Chicago, but if you have a quarter of a million dollars to put down on a Midwestern cracker box (nasty living), or some REAL money for one of the bigger, safer houses, what are the odds that you'd want to send your kids to public school anywhere? If you have that kind of cash, send them to private school.
Yes, the people are nice, but are they really that much nicer than the ones in Elmhurst or (I'll probably get shot for writing this) Wheaton? I don't think so. The problem with Naperville is that the place has become a fashion statement, in a very un-Midwestern way, and since you're following the trend instead of leading it, you can expect some seriously lousy buys in housing. Do you really buy into the bubble before it bursts?
I mean, come on. A half a million dollars for an upholsterer's family estate? It's madness.

As everyone has said Naperville is expensive but it is a great place to live; and the value of your home will appreciate. The schools are some of the best in the country and the amenities are great. Downtown has trendy shops and it is really fun. The libraries are great and so is the Riverwalk, and they do things to pull the community together.
If you are church oriented they have some great churches - traditional and contemporary.
I have found the people friendly.
Yes the population has exploded and it may be cheaper to live in Plainfield, Warrenville, North Aurora and other places but I am a fan of Naperville.

Naperville is very expensive. Try a surrounding subarb like Warrenville or Aurora or Bolingbrook. You can get so much more for your money in a surrounding town. Naperville is also highly congested and can take you 20 min to go across town because of all the traffic- especially route 59.

Naperville is pricey, particularly in housing costs. I own a $170K house 60 miles from Naperville that would go for $500K in Naperville.

Naperville has grown dramatically over the past 25 years. Its a well to do area with some great older homes too. You pay to live there, but as they said, its worth it.

It's a nice Western suburb- houses are an arm and a leg out there, though, Good luck in finding housing. But it's a nice place, nonetheless...
