Absolutely. Most people recognize the word athiest and use it to cover anyone who is not a member of an organized religion. An athiest is actually someone who denies the existence of any God or Supreme Being. An agnostic is somewho believes that the question of whether or not there is a God is anknowable so they live life by the things they know and the experiences they have.

No, the two terms are as different as night and day, and I have NEVER heard anyone misuse the term "Atheist"

Personally, I think agnostics are just atheists try to make that final step.

And for the first answer, you're right, I have no "invisible means of support" and am totally fine with that. I also dont spend any money on magic crystals that bring me good luck, and I dont have a psychic friend that I pay 8 dollars a minute for advice. and I am ok with all of this...

No, it is the other way around. Christians, like agnostics, also 'dont know' that is why there is this thing called FAITH. An agnostic doesnt pray one day and not the next- or go to church every other Sunday - they behave like atheists.

Atheists just dont believe. Agnostics are just too wussy to say they are an antheist.

I agree.

If someone "knows" there is no God or Gods (seeing as the existence of God/Gods cannot be proved empirically) they are atheist, if they are not sure they are agnostic.

I used to say I was an atheist, but I call myself an agnostic. It makes more sense to me to call myself that.

If the person knows the other's beliefs, then he should use the proper word. I suspect there are more agnostics than hard core atheists.

Sadly, either one are individuals who have no invisible means of support.
