I'm writing my own plan for a school district. I would like opinions from parents, teachers, and students. What kind of scheduling (in your opinion) is best for elementary, middle and high school? Do you like block scheduling or not? Why or why not? What do you like about the scheduling in your school and what would you change? Thanks.

In high school, I experience both block and regular scheduling; I prefer block scheduling hands down. Not only can you get more information into one sessions, allowing the teacher to have more elaborate presentations, but it also gives the student an extra day to get homework done. It is also beneficial because it helps prep those who plan on attending college (in terms of the schedule).

Another thing you want to take into consideration is start times. I remember hearing in one of my Education classes that your brain operates at better times, depending on your age (elem. vs HS)

From a teacher aspect, when I worked with kindergarten, I prefer to have the itinerant class in the afternoon because the students have the best attention in the morning and we were able to get more down. It seemed that once they had lunch and playtime they were done for the day.

I hope this helps!

When I was in high school, we did an accelerated block schedule, so we had four courses in the fall, and then four different courses in the spring. I really liked it because for one thing, I didn't have to take seven books home every day. I also like that during my junior year, I took Pre-Calculus in the fall and then went straight into Calculus in the spring, so there wasn't time to forget anything. It was also really nice for the AP classes because we had time to take a practice section of the test during a class period. Another good thing was that if you didn't like a class or a teacher, you didn't have to have them all year. I think the teachers liked not having to prepare and grade as many lessons at a time. It was also easier to graduate in three years because you could get in the prerequisite courses by doing things like doubling up English classes (one in the fall, another in the spring).

block scheduling is good for everything but languages and math courses because just over the summer we lose about 30% of the stuff that we learned. over the course of a year you could lose 90% and would know nothing for the next class

At our school we dont have block scheduling but have seven periods in a day. Although this gets boring, we arent sitting in a chair for 1.5 hours per class.

i agree that block scheduling is awesome. at my school, we have to take 5 courses a trimester, and there are 8 blocks but 7 blocks a day so i have 2 blocks free everyday when my other same-block-free-friends and i go sledding near the soccer field and get back in time for our next classes! its awesome. i do wish that our school day started at 9 instead of 8 though. apparently the school tried (to make a school day 9-4 instead of 8-3)but then it interferred with away sports games because they would get back at like 10pm.

I easily have band at 7:30 on Monday and Wednesday mornings. I easily have a college rotary club assembly each 2d Tuesday at 8am. I easily have QCS (this large try that determines your eligibility for certain uni courses etc) practice each Friday at 8am. I easily have choir after college on Wednesday till 4:30. I easily have yet another band after college on Thursday till 4:30. I artwork one 5 hour shift after college and yet another 5 hours on the weekend. something else of the time I do assignments, practice my instruments and merely relax.
