Don't drink before singing. Keep room temperature water handy for dry throat, but too much liquid in your stomach can act badly and give you a stomach ache. Especially carbonated beverages. Hot Liquids are great for the throat but not right before singing. Tea is ok, but small amounts, not hot and no honey. Honey will actually put stuff INTO your throat where you want clarity. Lemon causes tissues to constrict, which will affect your voice. It can also cause the salivary glands to produce extra saliva - which you might think is good, but it makes you have to swallow more when you want to keep your throat clear.
The best thing I've found before singing is a sugar free peppermint. It clears the throat and has the added benefit of making your breath fresh. I eat light before a concert and cleanse the throat with the peppermint.
You can do the same with a good minty mouthwash. (Don't swallow - that's only for idiots in the movies.)

I've always heard tea with honey in it. (that's what I do)
Some drink lemon juice. I guess it depends on if you usually have a flem problem or not. (hence, the lemon juice to cut through it).
Mostly for me, if I warm up slowly, singing very quiet, long sustained notes, going up a chromatic scale starting VERY low pitched, concentrating on trying to keep my throat as open and relaxed as possible, it helps.
If I just start belting out, I can blow my voice out sooner.

Water and warm tea with honey are the perfect, i have heard. The honey is soothing for your throat. also, lemon juice is reliable on your throat - only dilute it on your water or tea and also you'll be effective :) only steer clean of milk and also you are able to be effective.

nothing citrusy, too hot, too cold, or anything with milk or cream.
basically, room temperature water.
if you eat bananas or potato chips or other oily foods they'll help.
i once spoke with a radio dj who said he lived off potato chips while in the studio.
