I agree about the fabric softener, it does make towel less absorbant. But, if the towels you have are already that way add about 1/2 cup white vinegar in the rinse water of the wash to restore the absorbancy.

To make towels more absorbent wash them with detergent that you normally use, and add 1/3 cup of vinegar to the rinse water. I hope this helps.

i have the same problem every time i buy new towels (which is every two years or so)
i usually put them in the washer on heavy duty ( if available)
and wash them about 3 times in a row(with no liquid fabric softener ) in HOT water ,,,,,,for at least the 1st few times, no need to dry them until the final wash cycle has been finished.........
once in the dryer only use half a dryer towel (for static)
i hope i helped you
and i also wash only one towel form the new batch the way i told you .
that way, if for some reason the cotton is crappy cotton and just never comes to absorb the way i like i can take the others back and only have to stay with that ONE that i washed.
.

White towels are naturally the most absorbent. If you have very soft water, you can use washing soap instead of detergent; that will help. If your water is hard, you can soften it with 1/2c bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) per load in addition to the soap.

Wash in as warm water as possible and do NOT use fabric softener..it reduces absorbency.

I don't know how to make them more absorbent but I do know that if you use bleach on them while washing that it will make them less absorbent.
