I think you have to heat the material by laying down an ironing cloth on top of the polyester. Then once the polyester is heated, you place the patch on and then place the ironing cloth over the patch and iron that - then do the back side of the jersey.

You can't. The heat it takes to bond the patch will melt the polyester.
