My husband is a cop and thru his academy training they say its best not to have anything in the crib like stuffed animals and bumpers (which really is not necessary since the crib bars are spaced enough to where the baby won't be able to go thru) until 12 months. The best thing is to just have the fitted bed sheet. If you use a blanket, place the baby with his or her feet at the foot of the crib. The blanket should reach no higher than the baby's chest and the ends of the blanket should be tucked under the crib mattress. (this is from the link below and it has a picture of it) There are flannel pajamas and they are good for the winter.

My husband got a brochure in class and it has the same thing at the website:

Depending on how old your little one is, I used swaddle blankets until my son grew out of it. I loved those things.

Never EVER put stuffed animals in a baby's crib. Even if they are a newborn. You can put blankets in from the beginning, just as long as they are not too too think or big. A recieving blanket is best for when they are under a year, after that a slightly larger blanket would do.

My youngest baby turned one in Feb, and she has a couple of favourite 'cuddlies' that are small, and I keep them at the bottom of the cot, so when she wakes up in the morning, she can play with them safely (and give me some more time in bed!).
I don't believe in putting all these noisy cot-toys and stuff in the cot as she understands that the cot is a place for sleeping not BIG NOISE and freaky toys!
It's worked as she goes to bed at 7pm and has one feed at 2am then sleeps on til 7am.
I don't put her in the cot at any other time apart from bedtime.

Not until they are a year old. You can put warm jammys on them and also they sell a sort of sac that buttons on the shoulders that you can use when they are small.
